Recently Funny Biz Writers was hired by the CEO of a major high-tech / Internet company based in Europe, with offices in multiple continents, including a branch in Silicon Valley, California. The company creates online advertising components used by every kind of business and they do very, very well. They hold a large annual meeting and this year they flew around 1,700 of their employees in from around the world to a large European capital where they all engaged in a few days of activies, including informational and training sessions and a lot of meals and fun around town. One of the highlights was when they rented out a large auditorium and presented an inspirational business-related program for their very large employee audience, the cornerstone of which was a fifteen minute, two man sketch comedy presentation performed by their CEO and #2 in charge VP!! These very serious men in the world of Internet 2.0, these Information Age warriors and business magnates were happy to put on wigs and funny costumes, use silly props and physical humor, to make this meeting extremely fun and memorable for their employees. They got across the important messages related to company goals, expectations and performance but they did it with a lot of very fun humor and a willingness to poke fun at their own company and, most important, themselves.
These guys had a great idea, but there was a very important second component that neded to be handled right- the writing of the comedic live sketch script. For this they made a decision that only reinforced the combination of genius and common sense that has made them tremendously successful and wealthy thus far- they hired a proven EXPERT. They hired Funny Biz Writers. I will let you in on a secret. Writing a script for an extremely no-nonsense European-based CEO (he wanted it all in English, as everyone in the company, himself included speaks at least passable English) felt like a special kind of pressure. Nearly 2,000 people is a serious audience. The standards were high. He and his co-executives know something about live theater, comedy and sophisticated wit. Funny Biz Writers felt itself to once again be on the "firing line", so to speak- performing an extremely specialized task for executives and professionals at a very high level- people who move in a world of gold standards, platinum cards and 5 diamond accomodations. Truth be told, however, writing this script was also a LOT of fun. It took us back to our days in the thick of the sketch comedy scene in LA, where we also created short films and videos which did well, got notice and landed us in some prestigious festivals. We approached this comedic script with the same sense of creativity, whimsy and attention to deal, the same comedic ZEAL with which we'd approach a sketch show meant for packed theaters or a film to be seen by the most discerning eyes. We take pride in what we write and imagine that the audience somehow knows that we are the writers and that they would be judging US! The corporate CEO & VP's live sketch show presentation went GREAT... fantastique, wunderbar, muy bueno! They smashed it and everybody had fun and a lot of laughs. And I am sure that corporate performance and revenue will increase again this year. The point is, writing comedy for our clients is more than a job, it's a passionate expression of our gifts and hard-earned skills and abilities. But the value a client gets from showing professional, cutting-edge comedic content to their employees, peers, or potential customers is hard to put a price on. We'd start at "infinity"? But then again, we're professional comedy writers, not trained economists. Most clients of ours- and I mean the vast, overwhelming majority- totally understand and appreciate the difference between the mildly amusing or pleasantly cute writing of the lay person, and the cutting-edge, powerfully effective and logical-yet-unpredictable joke writing of the professional comedy writer. Occasionally, though, we may encounter a prospective client who does not understand the difference between the two and the effect that one or the other will have upon a group of people.
Many people out there in Normal People-ville (it's a nice town, good parks, great place to buy real estate!) are naturally a bit amusing, with an easy, humorous way about them. Often, this describes our clients and they smash the roast & speech scripts we write for them out of the park with their ability to deliver the words with some verve and a sense of fun. Occasionally we come across someone who has an innate ability to nail down a funny line on paper- be it a joke with a strong reference or a witty cutting remark. Much more often than not, however, when we see a "lay person" attempt to write a funny speech or roast, the lines fall flat because the jokes are unspecific, the punchlines tentative, the exagerrations timid, the references limited, the area targeted too obvious, not honest enough or just cliched. Overall, the writing lacks insight and revelation. Believe it or not, well written jokes accomplish the qualities described by all of those pretenious words. Have you ever been to a wedding where multiple people on both sides (Bride's & Groom's) got up to speak, and it was pretty much a cavalcade of: "Oh my God, well.... Karen is, like... totally a character! I mean, everyone who knows her knows that she is, like, crazy! Like, you should see her shopping at Macy's. I think she might have a little problem with shopping. Cause her closet is like... big as a whale!" AND "Brad was always an out-of-control mess with a heart of gold. We thought for sure the dude would just keep dating random chicks who wouldn't dig our fantasy football league and our Sunday keg runs to New Hampshire, but then he met Karen and she is totally cool, she's just awesome." ??? These speakers may get a slight smattering of polite, over-eager laughs from close family members and friends who've had several flutes of sparkling duck. But what they're hearing is a sad and unfortunate waste of valuable minutes in which the hundreds assembled could've been hearing crackling, fresh, totally unpredictable and HILARIOUS comments, shedding profound insights on true human nature to everyone in attendance, and causing people to belly laugh uproariously and literally fall out of their seats. When the difference between boring, mundane mediocrity and unexpected, razor-sharp brilliance costs less than the appetizer, think about what people are going to remember and really take away from the event. That kind of flat, diluted speech writing is exactly what we DON'T do. We do the OPPOSITE. We research the interesting, offbeat specifics of the person BEFORE we even start writing. And then we craft jokes using the tools of effective professional comedy- exaggeration, analogy, comparison, sudden-left-turn and so forth. The level of jokes you expect to see on a Comedy Central Roast (except generally a LOT cleaner) or on a late night TV talk show standup set. On occasion we have gotten look at material written by alleged "professional comedy speech writers" and found it to be just a bit better than the aforementioned lay person material. What these other "professional comedy speech writers" do really isn't our business. But the difference is huge to YOU, when you or someone you know is delivering an important speech or roast at an event which will carry significance in people's lives for a long time, if not forever. We have heard, on occasion, a person say "comedy is subjective", usually when trying to argue why that person should just go with the unfunny, flat, meandering writing of the lay person over the drastically different, very high quality comedy writing of proven professionals such as Funny Biz Writers. On occasion we have been forced to puncture this rhetorical bubble and explain that actually, no, comedy is not always purely subjective. If you deliver the aforementioned amateur roast speech to a group of 100 people who speak English, you will get some light, nervous smatterings of laughs, and a lot of shiftless playing with silverware and gulping of whatever drink is at hand. If you deliver a high-quality roast speech with real JOKES to the same 100 people, you will get concussive, rolling laughs on 90+% of the jokes, and people running up to the presenter afterward, aggressively patting him or her on the back, saying how "awesome" it was and asking "HOW'D you get to be so funny?!" This is not written to be mean or arrogant. We've met so many FANTASTIC people through this work, many of whom have truly great personalities and are like pro comedians when delivering our speeches and destroying their audience. We just think it's very important for people to understand the difference between mildly amusing pleasantries and undeniable strong jokes. We wouldn't try to do our own taxes, cut our own hair or fix our own cars. We hire highly accomplished and trained professionals for that. We suggest that if you want to blow away the audience when speaking at your next work or private event, and transform your social standing, your reputation and your job level, hire some real joke scientists, writers who have spent years crafting jokes hat hit hard, precisely and unexpected. Like, for instance, the professionals at Funny Biz Speech Writers. The difference is so worth it! We'll be honest- hiring Funny Biz Writers will not only be one of the most cost-effective and personally & professionally rewarding moves you've ever made, it will also be a whole lot of fun! There's a lot that's serious about your work, your career, your life, but it doesn't have to all be so serious. In fact, it's healthy and realistic to insert some levity, some humor, some jokes into the proceedings! That's where we come in. We've written for CEO's, Vice Presidents, owner/operators, managers, doctors, attorneys and a lot more. We've custom written them completely personalized speeches, presentations and scripts for their business-related events and also for private events, such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and so forth at which they were asked to speak. Here's the funny thing- life is serious and everyone's in a rush to get stuff done, but humans really love to laugh. They love to relax and make fun of it all. They love to take a good-natured poke at the things we're told to keep a straight face and stiff upper lip about. And that's what we do better than just about anyone- turn the serious into the funny, the unexpected into the inevitable, the arcane but distinctive detail into the screamingly funny laugh line. Besides getting the job done better than anyone ever expected, you will have a great time working with us, telling us the simple facts of your honoree, your company, your event, and seeing as we turn factual straw into comedy gold. You'll laugh out loud every time you read one of our drafts of your document, and you'll feel fifty feet tall and made out of awesome when you deliver the speech to your plesantly stunned audience. Do a favor for yourself as well as for your audience- harness the power of strategic humor to win with your message. The laughs you create will help you... and the world! Whatever type of audience you are addressing, the Funny Biz Writers' expert, precise, proven and hilarious humor additions will get you and your message remembered, appreciated and sought after. Nothing entertains and leads to retention and a positive association like strong, intelligent humor. Let us massage your message, your script, your presentation, whether it be a tour guide talk, a sales motivation address or a technical or professional training. We are comedy writers who have proven ourselves in the competitive trenches of the Los Angeles comedy scene and also have backgrounds in corporate America and understand the needs of professionals, business owners, managers and others who are in the "real world" and not in TV or films. Use us to make you the "Star" of your world. We provide TV & comedy theater level writing at an Akron price!
Let's be honest here- one of the best things about working as a comedy speech writer in the Funny Biz Writers is the interesting, unpredictable, often exciting clients who come through our proverbial door. One such example, recently, is a partney attorney for one of the top law firms in Washington, DC, who had the slightly unusual predicmant of having to deliver a 'mock trial' argument at a full house in an historic theater as part of a series of cultural events. Here's the rub- while her trial may not have been 'real', her performance and preparation were really important; the panel deciding on the mock trial included two prominent DC Federal judges and a sitting US Supreme Court Justice! Funny Biz Writers researched and custom wrote five pages of sharp, very original, creative and funny material regarding the literary/historical issue up for debate in the trial. Needless to say, our attorney slam dunked her arguments and was extremely happy with the quiet 'legal' assistance she received from Funny Biz Writers. The Supreme Court Justice ruled our client's performance 'Extra-Constitutionally funny". We ruled it another success. You don't have to be a legal eagle nor a Justice to benefit from our customized humor writing. You just need to have an upcoming public speaking engagement. Funny Biz Writers rests its case.
Funny Biz Writers was retained by a doctor- that's a medical doctor, a REAL doctor, like stethoscope and white coat, not a philosopher- based in South Carolina who is so high up in his field that he holds the annual presidency of his specialty's professional organization and had to do deliver a lengthy, erudite and quite scientifically detailed presentation to an enormous room full of his medical peers in New York City. Also in attendance were some non-MD celebrities with a strong interest in the related medical health issues. They included Bill Clinton, Michael Douglas and Bud Selig. Our client not only smashed it with his fantastic speech- which was peppered with laugh lines written by Funny Biz Writers, making his very serious topic quite entertaining and ultimately more memorable, but he got to zing the aforementioned famous men, standing on the stage with him, using jokes we'd also supplied. The operation was a success; the patient came out stronger and more vital than ever. You don't have to be a nationally recognized MD to improve people's lives with humor. You just need to be yourself. And you probably need to hire Funny Biz Writers. Like, stat!
Okay, we at Funny Biz Writers may not be super knowledgable about Ultimate Fighting, UFC, MMA and all of that ultra badass, bare knuckles (& toes) fighting, but we can appreciate a solid takedown, choke hold and snap kick as much as the next guy or gal. How cool was it when wew got contacted by a gentleman well-respected in that world, a fighter himself, who was invited to be a main speaker at the birthday party in Los Angeles of one Ultimate Fighting's most acclaimed and beloved figures, a long time referee and MMA teacher who knows TONS of the absolute most famous fighters on the scene. The guys in attendance at this fiesta of iron fists were billboard-famous, household name-famous, been-in-mainstream-movies-famous, and we at FBW were SO honored to be able to write edgy zingers that jabbed hard at the men who can not be stopped. These guys could probably make us submit with their pinkies, but our inside jokes had them falling over in their seats. You don't have to have rock hard ceps or a bull neck to come on real strong in your next speaking engagement, you just need the sharp, precise and funny words that cut through all defenses. And the easiest way to get those is by contacting Funny Biz Writers at [email protected] or 323/244-1496. You are guaranteed a knockout!
Funny Biz Writers got to write roast jokes for a high-profile roast of the most famous TV celebrity chefs in the English-speaking world (and these guys are known by a lot of the non English-speaking world). We here at FBW love fine food, cooking and cutting-edge cuisine, so it was great writing sharp zingers to skewer the guys who are usually doing the skewering (of meats, veggies or baked tofu). The entire roast was a smash hit and FBW's jokes went over great- so much so that media outlets mentioned some of our jokes in their highlights of the best lines that made the event such an uproarious success. You don't have to be a hugely famous super-chef to get the same effect next time you have to publicly speak. Hire cutting-edge LA comedy writers at an Akron price!
The Funnybiz recently created hilarious, extremely effective roast speeches for a top real estate executive in Los Angeles and a teacher/sports coach in Ohio. These clients LOVED the roasts that Thefunnybiz wrote for them, because the written products were smart, totally appropriate for the audience, highly personalized and very FUNNY! We also created novelty videos for clients that were able to show them on large TV's for their assembled guests. Don't go it alone next time you need to inform, address or entertain a group of people. Call up or email Thefunnybiz and smash it out of the park!! |
